Proper Training Wear (Dogi and Hakama, 道着・袴)
Aikido is practiced in a training uniform, the dogi (道着). Those holding first dan or above wear a black belt and, over it, a hakama (袴).
At Jeju Oseung Dojo the belt color does not change with kyu rank. Until you receive first dan, everyone wears a single white belt. The black belt and hakama may be worn only after you have been awarded first dan.
Choose a dogi that fits and wear it properly. Untidy dress is not only awkward to move in but can also cause injury.
- Sleeves should not be too long; it is best if your wrists show. Long sleeves hide your wrists when you apply a technique.
- The jacket should be tucked neatly under the belt so that it does not balloon at the waist and back.
- The trousers are best at about ankle length. If they are too long you may step on them and fall when you move your feet.
- The hakama should be at a length that does not catch your feet, tied so that the back sits slightly higher than the front.
- Do not wear a torn or dirty dogi. Always wearing a clean uniform is also a courtesy to the people you train with.
