Applied Throw-and-Pin Techniques (Nage-katame Waza, 投げ固め技)
Shomen-uchi Kote Gaeshi (正面打ち小手返し)
Key point: Turn your partner’s wrist out to throw them down, then bring them face down and pin with nikyo.
Shomen-uchi kote gaeshi (小手返し) is a technique classed as nage-katame waza (投げ固め技), throwing and then pinning. In hidari ai-hanmi, step the right foot to your partner’s side and control the shomen-uchi with the left tegatana. At the same time, turn with tenkan on the right foot, and from a position standing side by side with your partner, take your partner’s wrist with the right hand. Draw the right foot back one step again, leading your partner’s hand to your center. Then turn your partner’s wrist out with the right hand, add the left hand, and cut down. Finally, turning the elbow with the left hand, bring your partner face down and pin with nikyo.
- Do not turn too deep: Controlling the shomen-uchi, turn with tenkan to your partner’s side. Do not let the tenkan go too deep; stand side by side with your partner slightly ahead of you. Be aware of a position from which it is easy to take your partner’s wrist and easy to lead it.
- Key points of kote gaeshi: In hidari ai-hanmi, put your right thumb between the middle and ring fingers on the back of your partner’s hand, and with your four fingers hold the fleshy part below the thumb. Grip with strength centered on the thumb, little finger, and ring finger. Turn the wrist out, add the left hand, and cut down. Cut down with the feeling of putting the weight of your body’s center into it rather than the strength of your hands.
5 Take your partner’s wrist with the right hand and lead, drawing the right foot back → 6 Lead your partner’s hand to your center → 7 Turn your partner’s wrist out → 8 Add the left hand → 9 Cut down with the weight of your body’s center behind it → 10 Your partner goes down → 11 Using the wrist as a fulcrum, take the elbow with the left hand → 12 Turn the elbow → 13 Bring your partner face down → 14 Pin with nikyo
- Turn the elbow to bring your partner face down: The basic rule of aikido pins is to bring your partner face down and pin them. Once you have turned the wrist out and brought your partner down, immediately bring them face down. The key here is to use the hand holding the wrist (the right hand) as a fulcrum, take the elbow with the hand you added to the wrist (the left hand), and bring your partner face down as if turning that elbow.
