Training Process

Jeju Oseung Dojo specializes in teaching Aikido and Katori Shinto-ryu.
Aikido is the Japanese pronunciation of Hapkido; we use the original Aikido pronunciation to distinguish it from Korean Hapkido.
Since Aikido and Katori Shinto-ryu are taught by different instructors, separate enrollment procedures are required for each.
For Aikido, you enroll with the Korea Hapkido Association, which involves an enrollment fee.
After enrolling, you can continue training at any dojo affiliated with the Korea Hapkido Association nationwide, without any additional association enrollment fee.
After enrolling in Aikido, you can take part in various examinations and events, and you may earn both the rank certificate issued by the Korea Hapkido Association and the international rank certificate issued by the Aikikai Foundation of Japan.
The time it takes varies depending on individual effort, but typically after about 400 days of training and roughly 8 examinations, you will be promoted to first-degree black belt (Shodan).
After being promoted to Shodan, you may formally wear the black belt and hakama during training.

If you wish to train, the basic costs are the enrollment fee, monthly training fee, and uniform (dobok) fee.
The uniform can be a plain white judo uniform with no markings. If you already have one or know where to buy one, you are welcome to purchase it yourself.
Since the dojo does not keep uniforms in stock, we can arrange the purchase on your behalf if you would like the dojo to order one for you.
The uniform cost is the actual retail price.

Aikido Training Costs
Enrollment Fee: 30,000 KRW

Monthly Training Fee: 120,000 KRW
Uniform Fee: approx. 100,000 KRW

For Katori Shinto-ryu, you enroll under Sugawara Sensei of the Sugawara Budo Institute in Japan, and an enrollment fee applies here as well.
Once you enroll in Katori Shinto-ryu, it is difficult to withdraw, and unlike Aikido, the enrollment cost is quite high. Since you study under a single teacher, it is very difficult to start again if you quit.
The truth is that classical swordsmanship is not something you can casually attend the way you would a regular academy. Even if you quit and try to study elsewhere, you would still need to study under the same teacher, making it extremely difficult to learn again within Korea.
We recommend giving careful thought before enrolling.
After enrolling, if you train diligently for about 3 to 5 years, you will acquire the curriculum up to the Mokuroku level, at which point you will receive the Mokuroku certificate from your teacher.
After that, with about 5 to 7 more years of training, you can earn a teaching license.
Once you receive your teaching license, with your teacher’s permission, you are qualified to accept students and teach.

Katori Training Costs
Enrollment Fee: 10,000 JPY (Japanese Yen)
Monthly Training Fee: 120,000 KRW
Uniform Fee: approx. 200,000 KRW

Training Days: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday (3 times a week)
Training Hours:
Tue, Thu: 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Saturday: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

You can learn both.
Your body and mind will be quite tired, but if you have the passion,
it is not impossible.
Since you must enroll and purchase uniforms in two places, the cost can be a burden.
The training fee in this case is 150,000 KRW.
